Blue-throated macaw
Ara glaucogularis
The blue-throated macaw is a critically endangered macaw found only in a small region of Bolivia's Beni savanna. Trapping for the pet trade and habitat loss reduced the wild population to a few hundred birds, and it is now the focus of nest-box and habitat-protection programs.

Habitat & enclosure
Endemic to seasonally flooded savanna with islands of palm and gallery forest, where it depends on motacu palms for food and on tree cavities for nesting. Wild numbers are tiny and localized. Captive birds exist in managed breeding programs; this profile frames the species in conservation terms, not as a recommended pet.
Diet
Specializes heavily on the fruit and mesocarp of motacu and other palms. Its dependence on specific palms ties its fate to savanna habitat management. Educational profile only.
Behavior & temperament
Lives in pairs and small groups and competes for scarce nesting cavities with other large birds, a key bottleneck addressed by artificial nest boxes. Slow reproduction and a tiny range make every breeding pair significant to the species' survival.
