Olm

Proteus anguinus

⚖️ Compare

The olm is a blind, cave-dwelling aquatic salamander of European karst caves, sometimes called the 'human fish' for its pale skin. Adapted to total darkness and remarkably long-lived, it is vulnerable to groundwater pollution and disturbance of its fragile cave habitat.

Lifespan50–100 years
Native regionSubterranean waters of the Dinaric Alps (south-eastern Europe)
Climate🍂 Temperate
Water type💧 Freshwater

Habitat & enclosure

Lives in underground rivers and pools within limestone (karst) cave systems of the Dinaric region. Because it depends on clean groundwater, pollution and water abstraction at the surface readily threaten it. It is strictly protected; this profile is conservation/education only.

Diet

A carnivore feeding on small cave invertebrates such as crustaceans and snails, with an extraordinarily slow metabolism that lets it survive long fasts in a food-poor environment.

Behavior & temperament

Permanently aquatic and neotenic, it retains larval features including external gills, and its eyes are reduced beneath the skin. It can live for decades and reproduce very slowly, making cave-water protection essential to its persistence.
