Laurencia

Laurencia · also called Flat Purple Laurencia, Color-Shifting Laurencia, Cherry Tree Laurencia, Succulent Laurencia, Purple Intricate Laurencia, Yellow-Brown Laurencia, Palisada perforata, Yuzurua iridescens

Laurencia is a large genus of firm, branching red macroalgae, often with small knobs at the tips. Kept forms range from small purple plants to larger, rubbery yellow or red ones, and some show a pale blue sheen under strong light. It is a chemically defended alga that many grazers avoid. Two kept forms, Palisada perforata and Yuzurua iridescens, belong to the Laurencia complex rather than to Laurencia itself.

Light

Moderate reef lighting suits most forms, and stronger light brings out extra color. Yuzurua iridescens shows its pale blue shine only under strong light, and the yellow Palisada perforata can redden in high light. Young plants are hard to identify, so expect color and shape to change as they settle.

Water

Standard reef parameters: 23-27 C (74-80 F), salinity ~1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4. As a fleshy red alga it needs no calcium beyond normal reef levels, and steady salinity, temperature and alkalinity matter more than exact numbers. It feeds from the water, so keep nitrate and phosphate measurable rather than at zero.

Soil & potting

Needs to be attached, not buried. A small holdfast at the base grips limestone, aragonite rock, compacted sand and even other macroalgae. Tie a piece onto rock or rubble and let the holdfast take over. Do not bury the base in the sand bed, or it will not establish.

Environment — humidity, temperature, placement

Moderate flow in a display or refugium at standard reef temperature, 23-27 C (74-80 F), works for most forms. Place it on rock where water keeps moving around the branches. Cherry Tree Laurencia is very small and notably fragile, so give it a spot where it will not be disturbed.

Propagation

Growth is moderate in most forms and slow in Flat Purple Laurencia, so give a cutting time. Trim a branch cleanly and tie it to rubble until the holdfast grips. Small species such as Cherry Tree Laurencia are fragile, so take cuttings only from healthy plants and handle them little.

Toxicity detail

No source covers cats or dogs, so the rating stays unknown. The genus is chemically defended: Laurencia makes halogenated compounds such as elatol, which deter reef fish and sea urchins. Harm to tank animals is not documented. Small grazers like amphipods are less affected, and tangs may still eat larger pieces. No coral smothering is reported.

Varieties & cultivars

Natural forms are the wild species; cultivars are selectively-bred colour or variegation forms of the same plant.

Natural forms6

Flat Purple Laurencia

Laurencia complanata. A small purple Laurencia with flattened branches spreading in a distinctive pattern. It grows fairly slowly.

Care tip Growth is slow, so give a cutting time before expecting much change.

Color-Shifting Laurencia

Yuzurua iridescens (formerly Laurencia iridescens). A red member of the Laurencia complex, not Laurencia itself, with a distinctive branching habit. Strong light brings out a pale blue iridescence along the branches.

Care tip Use strong lighting to bring out the blue shine.

Cherry Tree Laurencia

Laurencia sp. A very small Laurencia with stiff, erect, stubby branches that end in little knobs. Colors include red, pink and yellow.

Care tip Notably fragile, so handle it as little as possible.

Succulent Laurencia

Laurencia sp. A larger, more succulent Laurencia with rubbery, erect, stubby branches ending in small knobs. Plants may show red, pink or yellow.

Care tip Little is recorded about its care, so keep conditions stable and change lighting gradually.

Purple Intricate Laurencia

Laurencia sp. A small purple Laurencia with an unusual, finely divided branching pattern. It stays compact.

Care tip Little is recorded about its care, so keep conditions stable and change lighting gradually.

Yellow-Brown Laurencia

Palisada perforata (formerly Laurencia perforata). A larger, more succulent member of the Laurencia complex, not Laurencia itself, with rubbery, erect, stubby branches ending in small knobs. It is usually yellow but may be orange or red, and high light can turn it red.

Care tip Lighting affects its color, so expect it to redden under high light.
