The natural form: males show alternating diagonal turquoise-blue and red-orange bars across the flank, females are plain silvery. The basis for every line-bred color variety.

This species is notoriously prone to Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus (DGIV) from farmed stock — quarantine new fish and buy from reputable breeders, as wild-pattern fish are no more resistant than fancy ones.
