Habitat & space requirements

From the minimum an animal needs to be kept humanely, up to the ideal setup. Bigger is almost always better — minimums are floors, not targets.

Minimum

Pair + browse + climbing

2+ goats / 0.25 ac dry-lot + 3-sided shed + 5 ft fence

Goats are herd browsers — keep at least two, with climbing rocks/stumps, browse plants, mineral block (Cu/Se per region), and a clean dry shelter. Toggenburg is the oldest registered breed — Swiss dairy goat, distinctive facial stripes.

Life & growth stages

How this animal changes through its life — each stage often has its own care, diet and space needs.

Newborn

Newborn mammals are nursed on their mother's milk. Many are born helpless — blind, deaf, and sparsely furred (altricial, as in dogs, cats, and rodents) — while others stand and follow within hours (precocial, as in hoofed livestock).

Juvenile

After weaning, juveniles grow quickly and become increasingly active, playful, and independent. Adult coat, proportions, and (in many species) the permanent teeth come in as they approach full size.

Adult

Adults reach full body size and sexual maturity, with the species' mature coat and build. Sexual dimorphism — differences in size, mane, horns, or markings — is pronounced in some mammals and subtle in others.

Senior

Senior animals show aging signs such as graying fur, reduced activity, and a greater need for veterinary monitoring of joints, teeth, and organ function. Lifespan and the onset of old age vary widely by species and size.

Habitat & enclosure

Pasture plus a dry, draft-free, well-ventilated shelter. Provide at least ~15-20 sq ft of bedded indoor space per goat plus generous browse/turnout, with secure climbing-proof fencing (4-5 ft woven wire). Toggenburgs originate in a cool alpine valley and tolerate cold and damp better than heat; offer shade and ventilation in hot climates. Keep bedding dry to protect feet and udder.

Diet

Free-choice grass/legume hay or quality pasture and browse, supplemented with a dairy goat grain ration scaled to milk yield. Provide a goat-specific loose mineral (with copper and selenium per local soil), fresh clean water at all times, and a salt source. Avoid sudden feed changes and limit grain to prevent bloat and acidosis.

Behavior & temperament

Dairy breed. Alert, active, friendly and people-oriented but can be assertive and curious escape artists. Does are productive milkers with a notably long lactation; milk is moderate in fat and well suited to cheese. Generally quieter than Nubians.

Health

Generally robust. Watch for the usual goat concerns: internal parasites (barber pole worm — monitor with FAMACHA), coccidiosis in kids, foot rot in wet ground, CAE, CL and Johne's (buy tested stock). Heat stress in hot climates. Routine hoof trimming, deworming based on fecal counts, and CDT vaccination recommended.

Tips, DIY & hacks

Their pale facial stripes can sunburn on the nose and ears in strong sun — provide shade. Disbud kids early (within ~1-2 weeks) if a hornless herd is wanted. Milk on a consistent twice-daily schedule to support the long lactation. Strong fencing is essential; they test gates and lean on weak panels.
