Recognized turkey breeds — selectively bred for type, purpose, and appearance.
Habitat & space requirements
From the minimum an animal needs to be kept humanely, up to the ideal setup. Bigger is almost always better — minimums are floors, not targets.
Life & growth stages
How this animal changes through its life — each stage often has its own care, diet and space needs.
Habitat & enclosure
House in a dry, well-ventilated coop with high roosts and a spacious, predator-proof range. Being light and active, Royal Palms fly well, so use tall fencing or covered runs. Provide 6-10 sq ft indoors per bird plus generous outdoor space for foraging.
Diet
Start poults on 28% protein turkey/game-bird starter, transition to 20-22% grower then 16-18% maintenance ration. Excellent foragers that take a large share of their diet from insects and greens on range; offer grit and oyster shell for layers and clean water always.
Behavior & temperament
Active, alert, and good-flying ornamental/exhibition breed; also a fine forager and tick/bug controller. Hens are good natural mothers and the breed mates naturally. Toms are generally not aggressive. Primarily kept for beauty and showing rather than meat yield.
Health
Generally hardy and long-lived for a turkey. Poults need protection from chilling, coccidiosis, and blackhead disease (avoid co-ranging with chickens). Light frame means few conformation problems. Active nature can make confinement-stressed birds flighty.
Tips, DIY & hacks
Provide tall fencing or clipped flight feathers if escapes are a problem. Select for crisp, even black edging on white plumage for show quality. Let broody hens hatch and raise poults to maintain the line cheaply. Their foraging makes them excellent organic pest control on a homestead.
