Chinese pangolin

Manis pentadactyla

Fishing cat

Prionailurus viverrinus

Tropical

The fishing cat is a medium-sized wild cat of Asian wetlands, an adept swimmer that hunts in and around water. Vulnerable due to the rapid loss of wetlands and mangroves, it is a protected species and not a pet.

CRAdvanced

Javan rhinoceros

Rhinoceros sondaicus

Tropical

The Javan rhinoceros is one of the rarest large mammals on Earth, with the entire species surviving in a single national park on the island of Java. Poaching and habitat loss reduced it to a tiny relict population now under intensive protection.

Okapi

Okapia johnstoni

Tropical

The okapi is a secretive Central African forest mammal and the only living relative of the giraffe, with zebra-like striped legs. Endangered by habitat loss, hunting, and regional instability, it is restricted to the rainforests of the Congo.

Saola

Pseudoryx nghetinhensis

Tropical

The saola, sometimes called the 'Asian unicorn,' is an extraordinarily rare forest-dwelling bovid discovered by science only in 1992. Critically endangered and possibly numbering only a few dozen, it has never been successfully kept in captivity and may be on the verge of extinction.

Sumatran orangutan

Pongo abelii

Tropical

The Sumatran orangutan is a critically endangered great ape found only in the forests of northern Sumatra. Deforestation, largely for agriculture, and the illegal pet trade have driven steep declines in this highly intelligent, largely tree-dwelling primate.

Capybaras1

Advanced

Capybara

Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris

CapybarasTropical

Capybaras are the world's largest rodents, native to South American wetlands. They are semi-aquatic, highly social herd animals — keeping a single capybara in a non-tropical home environment is widely considered inadequate for welfare. Banned or permit-required in many U.S. states.

Exotic Mammals1

Advanced

Serval

Leptailurus serval

Exotic MammalsTropical

The serval is a long-legged, large-eared African wild cat prized for its spotted coat and extraordinary leaping and pouncing ability. It is a genuine exotic carnivore, not a house pet, and keeping one demands USDA/permit-level commitment, specialized space, and falls under strict and often prohibitive exotic-animal laws across much of the US.

Kinkajous1

Advanced

Kinkajou

Potos flavus

KinkajousTropical

Kinkajous are arboreal Central and South American mammals related to raccoons. They are charismatic but nocturnal, long-lived, and difficult to keep — they bite when overstimulated and carry zoonotic risks. Banned or permit-required in many U.S. states.

Marmosets1

Advanced

Common marmoset

Callithrix jacchus

MarmosetsTropical

A tiny, tufted-eared South American monkey that is highly social, vocal, and intelligent. It is a demanding, specialist primate that is legally restricted or banned in many places and is not a beginner—or arguably an ethical—pet.

Opossums1

Intermediate

Short-tailed opossum

Monodelphis domestica

OpossumsTropical

The short-tailed opossum is a tiny, pouchless South American marsupial kept as an exotic pocket pet and widely used in research. Strictly solitary and nocturnal, it can become hand-tame but is best for owners who accept a low-handling, escape-savvy little insectivore.

Raccoons1

Advanced

Coatimundi

Nasua nasua

RaccoonsTropical

The coatimundi is a long-snouted, raccoon-relative from Central and South America — intelligent, active, and destructive in the home. It demands huge climbing enclosures and expert care, and is illegal or permit-restricted in many US states, making it strictly for dedicated, prepared keepers.
